Safety Notice SN016 – Door Latches
The doors on a Safari Helicopter are simple and light, and are made to be easily removed; however, having a door come open in flight is distracting and dangerous.
As part of your pre-flight inspection, be certain that both doors are securely attached using a latching pin and that the passenger door is latched in both locations. After entering the helicopter, the pilot should ensure that the pilot side door is secured as well.
If a door comes open in flight, it is likely to depart the helicopter. Because the door is light and fragile, it is not likely to cause critical damage to another part of the helicopter.
The most dangerous element of this situation is the distraction and reaction of the pilot. Under no circumstances should the pilot attempt to close or latch a door that has come loose in flight. Focus on flying the helicopter safely and be prepared in case the door impacts some part of the helicopter. Land the helicopter as soon as safely possible and take appropriate action.
